To shoot ice hockey, you will need a lens that you can rely on when it comes to speed and sharpness. Lighting that changes and fast-moving players, having to be able to capture the action in the exact right time. The moment passes quickly, so you need to be sure that you can count on the autofocus to be in place, wherever and whenever you need it to be. You want to freeze the action.

Learning to shoot ice hockey takes practice. You need to be patient and stay alert of what happens on the ice, constantly. A good thing to do is to learn the game, making your photography a bit easier.

The SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports is a great choice for shooting an ice hockey game. It will give you a lot of reach, which means you will be able to capture the action on both ends of the rink. With its aperture of F2.8, you will both get a lot of light, but you will also get a shallow depth of field, helping out to blur out the background. Packed with all the technology that SIGMA has to offer, you can be sure that the performance, reliability and mobility of this lens is at its highest level.

Finnish photographer Tommi Lindgren took the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports to a hockey game between JYP Jyväskylä and Tampereen Ilves in the Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland.

“- The lens was great and fast, and I was really surprised when I got the photos on the editing screen and the photos were very sharp. At first, I felt like the focus missed a couple of shots that it maybe shouldn´t have, but that was when we were shooting through the dirty screen in the corner of the arena. That feeling disappeared completely when I got to shoot between the benches and straight to the ice without any obstructions blurring the image.”, Tommi said after the game.

The high-speed autofocus of the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports with a dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) and the Optical Stabilizer function ensure that you will get the right shot when there is no room for error.

“- The best feature for me to use is the stabilization of the lens, and it did what its supposed to do.”, Tommi continues.

“- Overall I felt like I was in full control of what I could capture with the lens, and it was only about me getting the shots, without any limitations regarding the gear. That feeling became even stronger when I saw how well the lens managed to capture all the images when viewing them on a bigger screen. Quality felt very good and the lens was surprisingly light. From this experience, I would say that it is easily the best 70-200mm F2.8 for that price.”, Tommi ends with.

Taking a look at Tommi’s photos, we certainly have to say that he managed to freeze the action in an amazing way!
